SIGNING FAMILIES : Signing with a "Twist!"

Many people are interested in sign language. Some feel that learning to use American Sign Language (ASL) is a "fad", especially the popular "baby sign language". For me, sign language is part of my life. I learned to sign over thirty years ago, have made great friendships with people from the deaf community who use sign language and now own SIGNING FAMILIES, a company that teaches others to learn this wonderful language with roots deep within the deaf culture. The difference, however, between SIGNING FAMILIES and some other sign language instructional companies is that I am a School Psychologist that has worked over 20 years with children and families. Therefore, all of our workshops and products for children and families merge principles of developmental psychology with sign language acquisition! In other words.... we are a sign language instructional company with a bit of a "twist"!

I also have promoted through the years the use of sign language with a variety of individuals, such as children with developmental delays who are non-verbal or first responders who may be the initial people to help deaf individuals during a crisis or accident. I also believe in the value of parents, caregivers and educators learning sign language for many reasons; including signing to the pre-lingual baby or toddler in order to promote language development or the ill child who has a trach tube and cannot "speak". Also, sign language has proven to be an excellent method to help with behavior management within a classroom. Parents who know sign language also can "converse" with their child when the environment is too noisy or talking is not advised.
